Like most of you, I love movies of all types.  A few things have brought that into distinct relief recently - particularly my acquisition of a DVD player and Dolby Digital sound system, and the American Film Institute's 100 Best Movies of the Past 100 Years effort.

In watching the AFI program, I realized that many movies probably weren't on the list that some people feel should have been.  So started the research.

AFI started with a panel that selected the Top 400 movies.  I've included their directory and synopsis materials here (they make a very effective reference, and the list has few omissions).  Next I added in another list, from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS, owner of the Oscar awards), to find all the movies that have received the Best Picture award.  Finally, I collated in another opinion, that of Mr. Showbiz, an independent entertainment website.

And so you'll find my list of the Best Movies of All Time.   It's kind of large (at 435 films), and certainly not comprehensive (there are tens of thousands of films).  In the near future I'll include links to be able to buy these films on DVD.
